Crayola Lectern
Meeting House Concerts

The Friends' Meeting House in Brighton's Ship Street is a wonderful place to experience music to which the concerts we have experienced there are testament. We look forward to presenting more extra special events such as these below.

Reviews:

Opening proceedings on the grand piano, the man known as Crayola Lectern evokes the fragile, forlorn spirit of Robert Wyatt, with a nod too to the deadpan surrealism of Ivor Cutler. Alistair Strachan, moonlighting from Hamilton Yarns on trumpet, brings a hint of Chet Baker, while former Cardiacs guitarist John Poole plays the Brian Eno role with his box of odd electronic noises and unsettling ambience: excellent, heart-stopping stuff.
Ben Graham - Stool Pigeon

Doubtless, much of my good feelings were also caused by seeing the first band up, the ever-vulnerable Crayola Lectern. On Casio, a crazed ex-Cardiac ploughing his way dutifully through a series of minor key changes. On trumpet, a Hamilton Yarn sending unassuming yet shimmering beauty soaring to the balcony, and sometimes speaking in tongues (lips) down his mouthpiece: plaintive, pleasing, poignant. And on piano, Mr Lectern himself, near self-deprecating in his Robert Wyatt fascination and stunningly beautiful with his chord changes, singing painfully funny and sometimes funnily painful strained lines about love and toddlers and mortality.
Everett True - Village Voice

William D Drake + Crayola Lectern
02/12/07

The first of The Meeting House concerts in December 2007 saw Crayola Lectern on the splendid grand piano alongside Alistair Strachan on flugelhorn and Jon Poole on Casiotone. They were supporting William D Drake  with whom Mr Lectern played some alto sax on Melancholy World from Mr Drake's superb Briny Hooves album. William D Drake's visit to Brighton quite enthralled those present with his otherwordly and fantastical compositions and songs.
